《高紅移雙黑洞:下一代引力波探測器的新發現》研討會

Seminar:- Binary Black Holes at High-Redshifts: New Discoveries to Be Made By the NextGeneration GW Detectors

The next-generation(XG) gravitational-wave(GW) detectors, Cosmic Explorer and Einstein Telescope, will be able to detect binary-black-hole mergers(BBHs) up to redshift of z~100 with a projected rate of ~10000/month. The extensive detector’s horizon allows for probing the highredshift BBHs in the distant universe beyond the current limit of LIGO-Virgo-Kagra. GW observations made by proposed XG detectors can be used to discover new populations of BBHs and to better understand the high-redshift Universe. First, the speaker will review the recent studies on the XG detectors’ ability to trace the cosmic merger rates to unveil new BBH populations, including the Population III(Pop III) binaries dominating at z~10 and the primordial BBHs beyond z~30. Making use of the distinctive features in the cosmic merger rates of different populations, the abundance of Pop III and primordial BBHs may be constrained at O(1%) level. Second, the speaker will talk about what we can potentially learn from the measurements of the cosmic merger rates, such as inferring the cosmic star formation history and probing the formation scenarios of supermassive black holes. If time permits, he will briefly discuss how we can better characterize the high-redshift populations with mass or spin measurements and inputs of detailed binary evolution physics.
