《以James Webb太空望遠鏡探索高紅移星系》研討會

Seminar of Research Postgraduate(RPg) Student:- Exploring High Redshift Galaxies with the James Webb Space Telescope

The study of high redshift galaxies provides unique insights into the early Universe. Studying their star formation rates and mass-metallicity relations are crucial for advancing our knowledge of baryonic cycle in early universe. The Hubble Space Telescope observations have faced challenges, including insufficient depth, limited wavelength coverage, and the misidentification of high redshift galaxies due to the confusion between Balmer and Lyman breaks.

The James Webb Space Telescope(JWST) heralds a new era in high redshift galaxy research. Its larger aperture enables deeper observations, detecting fainter galaxies at higher redshift. The JWST’s infrared capabilities allow us to observe rest visible light regions. By studying the Spectral Energy Distribution(SED) and the spectrum from the Near InfraRed Camera(NIRCam) and the Near InfraRed Spectrograph(NIRSpec), robust physical properties and redshift can be measured.

In this seminar, the speaker and the team present their research on high redshift galaxies using data from two surveys: Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science(CEERS) and Grism Lens Amplified Survey from Space(GLASS). Their sample is selected based on spectroscopic redshift measurements from different literatures. They analyse the SED of these galaxies to identify distinctive redshift-dependent features, which can help distinguish between different redshifts. Additionally, they perform stellar population synthesis on the SEDs to study the high redshift galaxies’ physical properties.
