Gamma and X-ray spitting celestial objects called magnetars were only theoretical until two scientists confirmed their existence using satellites. Now, magnetars tell us much about how physics works in extreme environments. Chryssa Kouveliotou and Victoria Kaspi are the co-winners of the 2021 Shaw Prize in Astronomy.
