Undergraduate Seminar:- The First Black Hole Image: How Did We Capture It, And What Do We Really See?
The first ever image of a black hole, taken by the Even Horizon Telescope, was released last week. The image shows the bright plasma near to the central black hole of the galaxy M87, and the so called shadow in the bright ring. The discovery is consistent with the prediction of Einstein’s general relativity.
In this talk, we will discuss the principle of very long base line interferometry which was used to perform the observation, the physics of the hot plasma in the warped spacetime, and how the relativistic effects and the emission give rise to the lopsided ring and shadow.
