Seminar:- How Do Galaxies Get Their Gas?

The condensation of gas into dark matter haloes is the first step towards the formation of luminous galaxies. After stepping into dark matter haloes, the gas experiences a series of dissipative and nonlinear processes such as radiative cooling, star formation, and stellar/black hole feedbacks, and finally forms the luminous galaxies that we observe today. In this talk, the speaker will detail the story about how galaxies acquire their gas. Especially, he will highlight some differences between the traditional picture and the new results from cosmological simulations: (i) the traditional model assumes that gas and dark matter are well-mixed before radiative cooling, but simulations suggest that they can be segregated during halo assembly; (ii) in contrast to the assumption of isotropic accretion, simulations find that gas is accreted anisotropically, and cosmic filaments play an important role in the accretion by transporting cold gas into massive galaxies and helping gas cooling for low-mass galaxies. With these new results from numerical simulations, we obtain an updated and more complete picture of galaxy formation.
